Small Group Facilitation Skills
what does this course cover?
Small group teaching is the format most doctors are handed and least often trained for. Five students at a bedside, eight around a table, one dominant voice, three silent, and very little time.
The skills to make any small group work at the bedside, in a seminar room, or online.
Learning outcomes:
- Structure a small group session with a clear purpose, so the group arrives somewhere rather than simply discussing.
- Read group behaviour as it happens, and intervene early when one voice starts crowding out all the rest.
- Use energisers, breakouts and questioning techniques built for adult learners, rather than filling an awkward silence.
- Build psychological safety quickly, so a learner will admit what they do not know in front of peers and patients.
- Adapt your facilitation for online delivery, where the usual signals that a group is engaged simply disappear.
