what does this course cover?
A resident who has failed a postgraduate exam twice arrives at your next meeting expecting an answer. Most supervisors get no training in exam coaching, so the fallback is more practice questions.
Drawing on the science of learning, performance psychology and brain health, this session shows you what blocks exam success for busy clinicians, and how to address it.
Learning outcomes:
- Diagnose why a capable, committed resident underperforms in exams, separating knowledge gaps from method, confidence and exam technique.
- Apply retrieval practice, spaced repetition and interleaving so your resident revises the way the evidence supports, not by rereading notes.
- Coach through questions rather than answers, so the resident owns the plan and can adapt it when the rota changes.
- Build a realistic revision schedule around night shifts, on call and leave, with checkpoints you review at each meeting.
- Recognise when the conversation needs to shift to confidence or anxiety, and where to refer beyond your supervisory role.
