Foundations of Coaching and Mentoring
what does this course cover?
You already coach and mentor, in supervision, on the ward, after a tough shift, whether or not it’s in your job plan. Most doctors pick this up through instinct alone, with no formal grounding in how coaching and mentoring actually work.
This workshop gives you that grounding, with practical models for holding powerful conversations that build trust and empower colleagues and trainees to find their own way forward.
Learning outcomes:
- Distinguish coaching from mentoring and choose the right approach, rather than defaulting to advice giving.
- Structure coaching conversations using a proven model so they stay purposeful, even in a packed clinical week.
- Use active listening, questioning and reframing to help colleagues find their own solutions.
- Give developmental feedback that colleagues can hear and act on, without damaging the relationship.
- Build rapport to challenge assumptions respectfully, creating space for genuine growth in your team.
