Supporting Experienced Appraisers - Refresher Training

This workshop is designed to enhance the skills of experienced appraisers in supporting their colleagues’ professional development. Participants will gain advanced techniques for delivering impactful appraisals, focusing on providing supportive challenge and sensitive feedback. They will also learn to navigate new appraisal scenarios effectively while integrating the GMC’s new Good Medical Practice domains (2024) into their practice.

The programme will refine participants’ abilities in using appraisals to support wellbeing, enhance communication, and create effective personal development plans (PDPs). With practical insights and real-world examples, experienced appraisers will be well-equipped to foster a supportive environment for their colleagues.

To equip experienced appraisers with advanced skills to support their colleagues’ professional growth, focusing on effective communication, supportive challenge, and adherence to the latest standards of Good Medical Practice as outlined by the GMC’s new domains (2024).

• Understand and integrate the new GMC Good Medical Practice domains (2024) into the appraisal process.
• Use appraisal to support colleagues’ wellbeing and help them adapt to challenges in their practice.
• Enhance coaching skills, including active listening, questioning techniques, and providing supportive challenge.
• Practice providing supportive challenge and creating actionable PDPs.
• Define what constitutes a good PDP and review examples to understand best practices.
• Address and discuss issues and concerns that arise in the role of an appraiser.
