Enhanced Supervision for Local Employed Doctors and International Medical Graduates

what does this course cover?

Many doctors entering the NHS as International Medical Graduates or Local Employed Doctors arrive with strong clinical skills and genuine commitment, yet find themselves navigating a system that was not designed with them in mind. The induction is often insufficient, the supervision inconsistent, and the unwritten rules of NHS culture rarely explained. For trainers, this creates a real challenge: how do you support someone effectively when their experience of medicine, hierarchy, and workplace expectations may be entirely different from your own?

This workshop, delivered by DoctorsTraining, is designed for trainers and supervisors who want to do more than meet a minimum standard. Through facilitated discussion, reflective practice and practical skills work, you will explore what genuinely effective supervision looks like for IMGs and LEDs, and leave with tools you can use straight away.

high-level aim:

To equip trainers and supervisors with the insight, skills and practical strategies to provide genuinely inclusive, high-quality supervision that enables IMGs and LEDs to thrive in the NHS.

Learning outcomes:

  • Reflect honestly on the hidden assumptions and cultural norms that shape how you supervise, and consider how these land for doctors from different backgrounds.
  • Understand the distinct pressures faced by IMGs and LEDs, including professional isolation, credential recognition, cultural adjustment and career uncertainty, and recognise these as system challenges, not individual shortcomings.
  • Design and deliver a structured induction that gives new doctors real clarity about expectations, culture and how to access support.
  • Apply a supervision framework that adapts to the needs of doctors who may be unfamiliar with NHS norms while remaining clinically capable and highly experienced.
  • Develop the confidence to have honest, supportive conversations about performance, progression and wellbeing without defaulting to assumptions or avoidance.
  • Identify the specific training and career development opportunities available to IMGs and LEDs, and understand how to advocate for them within your department.
  • Leave with a clear personal action plan to improve the supervision experience for the IMGs and LEDs you work with.
