what does this course cover?

This immersive two-day programme is designed for doctors stepping into, or preparing for, leadership roles in medical education. It focuses on the real challenges of leading people, supporting teams, and improving training environments within a complex and pressured NHS system.

 

Across the two days, participants explore a practical and evidence-informed approach to educational leadership. The programme combines leadership theory with hands-on application, enabling you to develop your own leadership style while building the confidence to lead others effectively.

 

You will explore core leadership concepts including situational and transformational leadership, emotional intelligence, and distributed leadership, and how these apply in day-to-day educational practice. There is a strong focus on understanding yourself as a leader, including your values, behaviours, and impact on others.

 

A key theme throughout the programme is how leaders create the conditions for high-performing teams. This includes developing psychological safety, building trust, navigating team dynamics, and fostering a culture where people feel able to contribute, learn, and challenge.

 

The course also develops your skills in coaching and mentoring, equipping you with practical frameworks to support trainees and colleagues, have meaningful conversations, and facilitate growth in others.

 

Alongside this, you will build capability in influencing, negotiation, and leading change, including stakeholder engagement, understanding organisational dynamics, and managing difficult or challenging conversations with clarity and confidence.

 

Importantly, the programme recognises the realities of working in today’s NHS. There is dedicated focus on mental fitness, burnout, and sustainable leadership, helping you develop strategies to maintain your own performance and support the wellbeing of your team.
