Supporting Doctors Experiencing Difficulty
what does this course cover?
The doctor everyone has quietly worried about is now your responsibility, and the difficulty is rarely just clinical. Health, external factors, knowledge, skills and cultural and behavioural differences all sit underneath, alongside work context.
You leave with the structure to move from vague concern to a documented plan that is fair and defensible.
Learning outcomes:
- Draw on shared experience of mentoring residents who require additional support, and recognise the early signs in your team.
- Open the first conversation about underperformance so it gets honesty rather than defensiveness, using structure you trust.
- Write SMART objectives and a remediation plan the doctor accepts, with review points and clear evidence of what good looks like.
- Document concerns, conversations and decisions so the record stands up if progression, revalidation or a formal process depends on it.
- Identify when a situation exceeds your role, and escalate to your TPD, DME or occupational health at the right moment.
