Supervisors Update: Core Toolkit

Supervision has changed since most of us were trained in it. Differential attainment, neurodiversity and health needs now sit in your caseload, and the paperwork arrives whether or not anyone has updated you.

This is the reset. One session on the core supervision toolkit as it stands now, so you know what your role includes and where it stops.

• Define where your supervisory role begins and ends, and name the point at which a concern belongs with the wider organisation.
• Give feedback that lands, including on suboptimal performance, using a structure that keeps the conversation developmental and not defensive.
• Recognise how health, neurodiversity and differential attainment shape a resident’s progress, and adjust supervision without lowering the standard.
• Set up a learning environment where residents raise problems early, so you hear about difficulty while it is fixable.
• Document supervision meetings so the record is fair, accurate and useful if the resident’s progress is questioned.
